Sunny Day Real Estate – Song About an Angel “Live”

Live at The Break Room 1999.
Live is a live album by American emo band Sunny Day Real Estate. A set list from the How it Feels to Be Something On tour, it was released in 1999 on Sub Pop. Sunny Day Real Estate was apparently displeased with the outcome of the record. However, their label Sub Pop apparently did not run the record by the band before releasing it to the public. This record is allegedly the reason why Sunny Day Real Estate left Sub Pop for another label.
The core of Sunny Day Real Estate formed in 1992, originally under the name Empty Set. Empty Set consisted of Dan Hoerner (guitar, vocals), Nate Mendel (bass), and William Goldsmith (drums). They released a 7-inch, Flatland Spider, before a tumultuous period of musical chairs and name changes. In that timeframe, Mendel took a break to tour with another band, Hoerner took over the bass, and the group was joined by Jeremy Enigk, a high school friend of Goldsmith. Before long, Enigk ascended as the permanent frontman of the band. Where Hoerner’s vocal style had been in the rougher, hardcore vein, Enigk’s higher-pitched, somewhat strained vocal style added greater emotional depth to the band’s songs. When Mendel returned, the complete band settled on the name Sunny Day Real Estate. They released another 7-inch, Thief, Steal Me a Peach in 1993.

    I saw them at …
I saw them at Liberty Lunch in Austin like ’98. This was the 2nd song I think and I had to leave the beer line cause I was like “HOLY SHIT!” ….I have seen a million great shows back in the day, including Jesus Lizard, Nirvana, early Soundgarden, Pumpkins, Bungle, etc, and I will never forget this one. Top 5 for sure, nothing compares at all. Nobody ever sounded like SDRE and nobody ever will.

    Hey children here’s …
Hey children here’s a quick lesson, Yes this band does come under the genre ‘emo’, that is in reference to being the early 90′s genre of ‘emotive hardcore’ (see: Weezer, Modest Mouse, At The Drive-In), now this is not to be confused with that rubbish modern movement that is claimed as ‘emo’ (by the media) which is just a thinly disguised version of pop-commercial-punk (see: top 20 charts). 420 out

    I LOVE this band …
I LOVE this band and the song! What ever you guys call any kind of music, these guys were pioneers. Just like Jawbreaker. (My ALL time favorite band!) Would you all at least agree that MOST bands these days have lost true originality? Either way, I have my faithful old albums..including this one. ; ) How old are you guys, leaving these ignorant messages? I hate when people say, “I must be getting old.” But, seriously! Punk Rock and “EMO” was great! SORRY YOU GUYS MISSED IT! Keep an open mind..K?

    i would like to …
i would like to call this band emo. SDRE would give emo a good name.

  12. FetalityMetal says:

    This band is not …
    This band is not emo.
Seeing as the term emo was not coined in context of this style until early 2000′s at the earliest. This song was strong alternative at the time, matched with the likes of radiohead and such. Nor was emo used as a genre name in the 80′s like everyone is saying. Thats all bullshit, it was taken from the public seeing the hardcore punk seen as “a raw expression of emotions” not actually emo. Therefore everyone needs to shut the up unless they know something.

can you idiots shut up and just enjoy a good song?

  14. deekismusic says:

    emo = emotional …
emo = emotional hardcore. more specifically, a subgenre of post-hardcore. SDRE was influenced by that original DC sound, but is a different wave altogether. Call it indie-emo perhaps. Back in the day, it was just post-hardcore. Since all these categories get bastardized over time, kets just call it good muziks!

  15. peytonater says:

it is just a word …
it is just a word used to classify certain bands easier cause this is rock but then again Elvis is rock you know but when you hear Emo or Indie Rock you would think of SDRE or Fugazi more so than just hearing Rock. Fugazi and ROS are the pioneers it is common sense think about it, these guys must have been listening to some means of Punk band or Rock. i could imagine them listening to Fugazi and even The Smiths and gaining influence from the songs they wrote.

    Thats the beauty of …
Thats the beauty of SDRE. Jeremy’s connection with god empowered him to write such beautiful music. I think its sad that people on this have to fight over what label the music has on it. Just love the music.

  20. h8h8hate says:

Goodbye and enjoy your emo life!

  21. GrockJake says:

    Fuck that. I kind …
that. I kind the term ‘emo’ is lame as hell. Every band is emo, if you ask me. Show me a song where they don’t convey some sort of emotion. It’s the same way with Indie, because at some point in their career, almost all bands were indie. But you know what? I’m not going to try and look cool and fight the system. I accept these terms for the general public defines them, and I’m not going to make a big deal out of a word that’s used out of context. You’re an idiot if you do, soo goodbye.

  22. h8h8hate says:

    You’re just like …
You’re just like them emo scene kids, saying the same thing, rites of spring ,fugazi the so called pioneers of the emo music when the truth is they are a punk/hardcore band and they hated being labeled emo or emocore. it’s idiots like you who invented the gayest word in the world > EMO.

  23. ivansnightmare says:

    can you idiots shut …
can you idiots shut up and just enjoy a good song?

  24. GrockJake says:

    Fuck off cunt. …
off cunt. You’re just a troll. There was no internet hype of emo. Half of these kids don’t even know the Rites of Spring, Fugazi, Cap’n Jazz, American Football, Joan of Arch, Sunny Day Real Estate and other “real emo” is. And neither do you, so just shut you mouth, for god’s sake, please.
